At Pont Saint Martin
the ancient roman bridge indicates the
beginning of the Gressoney Valley,
which, crossed from the Lys stream,
extends itself up to the Monte Rosa
slopes.
The Gressoney Valley is the unique in
Aosta Valley where the
Franco-Provencal language is mixed to
that of the walser of German origin:
from Lillianes and Fontainemore,
francophone resorts, we pass to lssime,
a walser isle in the middle of the
valley, then to Gaby, another
francophone spot, and finally
Gressoney Saint Jean and Gressoney La
Trinite, walser places.
Gaby relies on family hotels, typical
restaurants and shops where local
products can be bought. The village is
small, surrounded by vegetation and
suitable to the stay of families with
children. Gressoney Saint Jean is the
greatest among the Communes of the
Lys Valley and is reach of services
and activities suitable to make the
summer vacation pleasant. Every year
the entertainment program is different
and always considering classic music
and master's concerts.
At the middle of the plain which
extends about 5 km, you will find the
chief district and, as an ornament,
the Gover Lake, an area available for
quiet, plays and various sports. The
evocative center relies on small shops
placed around the square and deserves
a visit and shopping round.
At Gressoney Saint-Jean it is possible
to make pleasant excursions, play
horse riding, mountain bike and
tennis. The golf club is note-worthy,
the valley buttonhole.
The domain of Gressoney La Trinite
reaches the majestic glaciers and its
nature are therefore really alpine, as
well as the houses are really "walser",
scattered along the slopes. Sometimes
aloof, sometimes assembled in nice
villages, these houses are the
destination preferred by the lovers of
natural and historical sciences, and
those who are fond of painting and
photography. Because of its location,
Gressoney La Trinite is the starting
point for every type excursion: from
the simple walk to the altitude
excursion and alpinism.
Your should not loose the emotion of
reaching the hut of Queen Margherita
at 4,559 m, the highest refuge in
Europe. Concerning flora and fauna,
you can see in both Communes of
Gressoney the typical mountain
specimen, including those who have
their habitat at the highest altitude.
The survival and the repopulating of
wild animals are encouraged by two
protected areas: one is widely
extended, from Lommatto to Netscho,
the other is more restricted but full
of roebucks, chamois and steinbocks.
Sightseeing
At Saint Jean, the Savoia Castle,
built from King Umberto the First for
his wife, the Queen Margherita. The
castle is open to the public and let
you visit the sleeping room of the
Queen and her portrait with the
typical costume of Gressoney.
Still at Saint Jean you can visit
Villa Margherita, now seat of the
municipality and the APT (Tourist
Promoting Center), whose construction
dates back to 1883.
At Issime, the parish Church of Saint
James, who’s front is decorated by a
large fresco representing the Last
Judgement. Inside the church, the main
altar in gold-plated wood dates back
to 1600.
