from the river Sesia that crosses the area with its
affluents, Valsesia begins 60 km far from the North
of Novara. From Varallo, the center of the valley,
to Alagna, at the end, there are 40 km around.
At north the valley is closed by the Monte Rosa that
offers the view of the South face from Riva
Valdobbia to Alagna. Alagna (or "im Land",
the territory for antonomasia), located at 1,190m,
is the most important of the thirty-walser villages
placed at the head of Valsesia and on the side of
Val d'Otro. Founded in the middle of 12th century
from some German-speaking people, Alagna is built
around the parish church.
Although relying on modern tourist services, Alagna
has been keeping the feature of an ancient mountain
village and offers to the visitor its culture and
traditions. Due to its orographical features and the
beauty of its landscapes, the river Sesia its
affluents are know and appreciated from the canoe
lovers.
Over hundred kilometers can be run, at different
difficulty levels: from the easy river section to
the difficult steps. The canoe schools are numerous
and professional: you can also learn and play kayak
and hydro speed and experience exciting descents in
the streams.
Anyway the fans of sports and open air can get much
satisfaction staying at Alagna and Valsesia.
Trippers and mountain bike lovers can explore
hundred well-guided routes with increasing
difficulty related to the altitude.
The horsing fans will meet equipped riding-grounds
and those who choose tennis, para-gliding, basket or
bow-shot, will dispose of well organized fields and
areas. We suggest moreover the golf club at the Alpe
Mera.
The naturalists will enjoy the Natural Park of Alta
Valsesia, the highest in Europe, as it includes some
tops over 4,000 m. Inside the park it is possible to
experience guided trekking following special routes.
Sightseeing
At Pedemonte, the Walser Museum, built from an
ancient 17th century-house and inserted in an
extraordinary architectural village, where the
traditions of one of the most typical communities in
Europe relive. At Alagna, the parish church,
unveiled in 1511 and built on an ancient chapel.
