The General Overview
Now notice how I said winter
here, and not ski? Skiing here , at these altitudes is a given.
Snow almost your proverbial sure thing.
But there is more to winter than
skiing, and in Cervinia winter is, well, a personality.True, at these altitudes one
cannot expect the soft beauty provided by luscious tree lines.
And the wind whipping up the canyons of these ultra high peaks
might even give the resort a tundra like feel. But as the saying
goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this beholder
sees a lot of beauty in the barren wind swept surroundings at
two thousand meters.
For The Matterhorn presides over
this resort, as it does with its famous Swiss sister, Zermatt.
It is the big draw, the star, the head honcho. But it is not the beginning and
the end. You see, most people on ski holidays come to ski and
have fun, in that order.
Or maybe not. So, without the
countless Kms. of beautiful and almost always snow- covered terrain
lying at its feet and spanning two different countries, the Matterhorn
might be just another boulder. Might be.
Anyway, if you are skiing on
either side of this rock, your chances of having a good snow
filled winter holiday are highly increased. This goes for those
who want to ski in summer as well as the more accepted time of
year.
