The Skiing Overview
Cervinia is a tremendous resort
for recreational skiers. It is a place where there is no pressure
to be a superstar on the boards, they are often drawn to resorts
with bigger reputations. Here, at 2,000meters under the shadow
of The Matterhorn you will have room to enjoy and improve.
The
"big M" is so close here in Cervinia that you may feel
you are actually skiing on it, rather than under it. And, the
altitude means that snow conditions are good almost always-even
when lower resorts are suffering. If we stress that the skiing
here is mostly forgiving, better skiers should not be put off.
The altitude and length of the runs, plus some of the skiing
to Zermatt can test most decent recreational skiers.
And for those who aren't quite as
adventurous, the ride alone is a relaxing experience. Throughout the
18-km long stretch covering a difference in elevation of 413 m. the
natural setting continually changes offering glimpses of idyllic
Tyrolean villages. An environment-friendly means
of transportation that invites you to take a holiday from your car too.
The Plateau Rosa at 3,400m is
a popular vantage point, and as well it is the starting point
for the ski run to Zermatt. This by the way is a must, but to
our knowledge it is not included on the lift pass. Aword to the
wise. Pay attention to the last returning times of the lifts
from Zermatt. Don't want to get stranded there, do we? The ski
runs to Zermatt can fall into two categories, easy and difficult.
Best go with an instructor or guide, at least the first time.
The slopes above Cervinia are
ideal for simply cruising or looking to find a little challenge,
either in the form of stamina (try the 12km run to Valtournenche),
or in more conventional challenge (try the difficult runs to
the village of Zermatt).
As there is more than 100km of
skiable terrain to choose from, Cervinia is likely to have something
to please you.
